About Us

Thomas Galletti
My name is Thomas Galletti and I am an 8th-grade student at The Park School of Baltimore.

This website dedicated to experiential learning is the result of a project called Advoc8. During our three years in middle school at Park, we spend time learning about advocacy -- first in terms of advocating for ourselves and, eventually, in advocating for others.

I am passionate about the subject because I consider it important that we, as a generation, learn to actually complete tasks through experience and therefore learn to understand and problem solve because we are in the reality of the task.

I have watched my parents have amazing careers and never be afraid to help their teams accomplish their work. My father, in particular, is a wealth of practical knowledge. He knows how to fix a car, renovate a house, build a desalination plant, cook an amazing meal and hem his own jeans. I have always wondered if all of these practical skills have been a part of the successful professional he is. I actually believe that they are.

The topic is a large and interesting one. For purposes of this project, I have narrowed my scope to that of understanding the concept of experiential learning, researching several schools which are dedicated to this approach (including my own!), discovering several maker-space and experiential learning venues and interviewing leaders in those environments. Beyond this, I am interested to understand the impact of experiential learning on students’ performance and self esteem..

What's Next (The Everest)

My "Everest", or the most challenging on-going component of this project, is to work, over time, to conceive a way to make a maker space educational facility available to all students at some point of their education in Baltimore City public schools.
